Sector ministries discuss a work plan to restore wildlife corridors in the country

The Sectoral Ministries met today July 28, 2023, in Dodoma with the aim of discussing the Action Plan to Eliminate Wildlife Threats in the country as a special strategy within the Government to reduce the effects of aggressive and destructive wildlife on citizens.

Speaking at the session, the Chair of the Session who is the Deputy Secretary General, Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliament and Coordination), Mr. Anderson Mutatembwa said that the Sectoral Ministries have found a common understanding about Wildlife Sanctuary.

I am confident that through this meeting we will get a common understanding and it will help in the planning and implementation of all our projects in all the Sectoral Ministries, one thing we will have understood what is corridors and when we have doubts we will contact the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism” said Mutatembwa.

He has explained that the challenge of encroachment on the areas of corridorsWildlife Sanctuary is a cross-cutting issue affecting various Sectoral Ministries citing the example of TAMISEMI, the Ministry of Lands, Housing, Housing Development and the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries.

He said that some corridors are located in protected areas which have also been invaded due to the lack of coordination within the Government, so the meeting will solve the challenge.

He said that there are swampy areas in which there are villages that are registered with TAMISEMI, there are others that have investors who have been given land by the Ministry of Lands.

And, the Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, Commissioner Benedict Wakulyamba has said that the expectation of the session is to improve conservation and tourism issues and that each Ministry and each Sector has a responsibility to carry out conservation activities and improve tourism issues in general.

He added that, after the areas of corridors are evaluated, if they do not appear to be corridors , people’s activities will continue as usual.

For his part, the Chief Wildlife Researcher, from the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI), Dr. Hamza Kija has said that the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism through the Institute of Wildlife Research classified about 61 wetlands in the country, of which 20 priority wetlands were selected due to their ecological, economic, political, and importance in tourism activities.
